Katherine Johnson Chapter

Who was Katherine Johnson?

Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician and astrophysicist who worked at NASA. She was a critical part of the first American human spaceflight, and later an important part of the first moon landing. Her identity as an African-American woman working in STEM in the 1950’s provided many obstacles in her life, but her intense curiosity and brilliance throughout her life propelled her career and inspired many around her. Katherine Johnson passed away in February 2020, but her legacy lives on as a pioneer for space travel and an American hero, and as an inspiration for people in STEM everywhere.

Who's teaching?

Led by two seniors at Cupertino High School, Ishani and Anusha are the Co-Directors of the We Love STEM Katherine Johnson Chapter. This year, they are teaching students from all over the world Web Development for Business Entrepreneurship.

The two are very connected with their students, as they began the first official WLS branch in 2019 at the Cupertino Library teaching Arduino and Web Development, and have continued to teach many students every year. They are excited to get the opportunity to share their knowledge with their new and returning students!
